New research puts date of Murray River Aboriginal site back to the time of last Ice Age
The oldest known Aboriginal site along the River Murray within South Australia has been identified in the first comprehensive archaeology survey of the Riverland region. The site, identified by radiocarbon dating mussel shells taken from a midden overlooking the Pike River floodplain downstream from Renmark, was part of a project that sought to establish a chronology of human habitation in the area by analysing material taken from over 30 sites in the region.
Prior work by other researchers performed in the s dated skeletal remains in the area to around years ago. All life came from the river, from water. Back then when the climate was colder and drier, the area around Murray-Darling Basin was arid with the river and its systems under stress.
Evidence of Indigenous occupation dating back 29, years has been uncovered in the Riverland. Researchers from Flinders University used.

Evidence of Indigenous occupation dating back 29, years has been uncovered along the River Murray in South Australia. Researchers from Flinders University used radiocarbon dating to analyse river mussel shells, the remains of meals eaten long ago, from a site near Renmark, close to the Victorian border.
As well as finding evidence of the most ancient settlements, more than 30 additional radiocarbon dating results were collected in the region from the recent present to 15, years ago. During this extended period, climatic conditions were colder and drier across the Murray-Darling Basin. In the SA Riverland, dunes were advancing into the Murray flood plains, river flows were unpredictable, and salt was accumulating in the valley.
Study co-author Amy Roberts said the findings also filled in a significant gap in the understanding of Aboriginal occupation in the Murrray-Darling Basin. Home News National. The find extends the known timeline of Aboriginal settlements in SA by as much as 22, years. They also show how Aboriginal people adapted to an ever-changing river landscape. Australian Associated Press.
As the largest wine producing region in Australia, it is located a little over two hours north-east of Adelaide and stretches west along the Murray River from Paringa to Blanchetown. Home to just under wine grape growers with more than 21, hectares under vine, it is responsible for a third of the national crush. However, its influence and importance to the national wine industry flows far beyond this.
Its unique character within the Australian wine story is unparalleled and is as equally focussed on scaled farming with smarts as it is with premiumisation in mind.
The results, published today in Australian Archaeology , used radiocarbon dating methods to analyse river mussel shells from a midden site overlooking the Pike River floodplain downstream of Renmark. More than 30 additional radiocarbon dates were collected in the region, spanning the period from 15, years ago to the recent present. Together, the results relate Aboriginal people to an ever-changing river landscape, and provide deeper insights into how they responded to these challenges. The period represented by the radiocarbon results brackets the Last Glacial Maximum commonly known as the last Ice Age when climatic conditions were colder and drier and when the arid zone extended over much of the Murray-Darling Basin.
The river and lake systems of the basin were under stress during this time. In the Riverland, dunes were advancing into the Murray floodplains, river flows were unpredictable, and salt was accumulating in the valley. The ecological impacts witnessed during one of the worst droughts on record, the so-called Millennium Drought from late extending to mid , provides an idea of the challenges Aboriginal people may have faced along the river during the Last Glacial Maximum, and other periods of climate stress, researchers conclude.
The Last Glacial Maximum is the most significant climatic event to face modern humans since their arrival in Australia before 50, years ago. Recent studies have shown that the LGM in Australia was a period of significant cooling and increased aridity peaking around 20, years ago.

dating at ANSTO has supported research that vastly extends the known timeline of the Aboriginal occupation of South Australia’s Riverland.
Recent archaeological evidence led by Flinders University in collaboration with the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation supports the Aboriginal occupation of the Riverland area in South Australia for 29, years. Radiocarbon dating at ANSTO using accelerator mass spectrometry was used to acquire the ages of mussell shells from middens. In the first comprehensive survey of the area, one of the oldest Indigenous sites along the River Murray in South Austalia was discovered.
